![]() Easily two of my top 5 online gaming moments would be from Warbirds. Watching Dogfight brought all those memories back. These days I don’t imagine it would be the kind of project a VC might get excited about and want to fund, but amazingly such a game was up and running and profitable pre-2000. I guess I find it a little surprising that no one has really tried to copy Warbirds. I know the Russian combat flight sims maintained a strong audience of probably similarly interested pilots but they never grabbed me either. ![]() Also, spotting planes became very hard all of a sudden due to the ground having actual textures and thus combat less about zooming around and more about being the first to get the drop… which might be the evolution of PC gaming and completely unnavoidable but wasn’t something I enjoyed. The necessity of a large battle space for the foot soldiers and tanks made looking for a dogfight pretty dry stuff. I know WWII Online soaked up a lot of players but I found aerialĬombat in it to be fairly dry. Hell, I can’t remember the details at all. Perhaps it was the smallish combat space or the clean, crisp graphics or the flight model but for whatever reason the sequels never grabbed me and I don’t even think Warbirds lasted too long after 2000ish when I moved to the UK and got distracted by life.
